Spirit Airlines is growing it schedule to Cancun, launching two new routes this fall to the Mexican beach resort.
Flights from Baltimore/Washington (BWI) and Chicago O’Hare will begin Nov. 9. Spirit will fly one daily round-trip from each city.
“We are delighted to deliver this nonstop service to one of the most requested destinations in our network,” Mark Kopczak, Spirit’s VP of Network Planning, says in a statement. “These new flights expand our presence in Cancun and bring our first international routes to Baltimore/Washington and Chicago.”
Spirit will face significant competition on the new routes. American, Frontier and United all fly non-stop from Chicago O’Hare to Cancun while Southwest flies non-stop from Chicago Midway. From BWI, Spirit will go head-to-head against Southwest and Delta (seasonal, Saturday only) on its route to Cancun.
Once its new service begins, Spirit will serve Cancun with non-stop flights from six U.S. cities. The “ultra low-cost carrier” also flies to Cancun from Dallas/Fort Worth, Detroit, Fort Lauderdale and Houston Bush Intercontinental.
